Foto Event Features Latino Public Officials Three years ago, on the idea of another volunteer - Latinitas' photographers began donating "Latino-themed" pieces for auction, launching the first Latinitas Fotos de mi Alma Charity Photo Auction and Exhibit. Since, Fotos has attracted the generosity of local and national photographers, including this year's featured guest: internationally- acclaimed photojournalist Donna DeCesare. Fotos, which benefits Latinitas' many outreach programs, has attracted support of Latino public officials Sen. Gonzalo Barrientos, Rep. Diana Maldonado and Police Chief Art Acevedo, also, who are each letting themselves be auctioned for a one-on-one lunch meeting at the event. Fotos takes place on Thurs., April 16th at the M.A.C.C. from 6-8:30pm. Tickets are availalble in advance.
Project Latinitas Underway Inspired by mainstream fashion's unwillingness to deviate from the single, emaciated image of the American beauty, Latinitas is taking the industry into their own hands with its first-ever Latina Icons Fashion Show. Scheduled for Friday, May 8th, Latinitas program leaders are guiding their weekly middle and high school club participants with the planning, designing and styling of a girl-generated fashion show at the Mexican American Cultural Center from 7-9pm. Models will reflect the styles and energy of Latina icons such as Argentina's Eva Peron, Cuba's Celia Cruz, Mexico's Salma Hayek, the U.S.'s Dolores Huerta and art icon Frida Kahlo. "The girls are not only the models, but are researching their icons' histories, replicating their "style" and are creating multi-media presentations to be featured at the event." says Leslie Guerrero, Latinitas Program Coordinator. "And, our program leaders and some volunteers are helping as stylists. It's a great presentation of Latina beauty and mentoring." Teen Reporters Tackle SXSW Balancing interviews with Latina and Latino rockeros alongside Rolling Stone and Spin magazine were Latinitas Teen Reporter Interns this year at SXSW. Thanks to the wonderful guidance of staff from Rock en Espanol magazine La Banda Elastica, Latinitas young reporters were granted interviews with some of the Latino music industry's rising stars including now-solo, formerly Julieta Venegas' keyboardist - Ceci Bastida and rockeros Monte Negro. Guest Speakers Each school year, Latinitas invites a cache of talented media professionals to visit our after school programs to talk about the work they do. These visits spark girls' and teens' interest in internships, college, the arts - everything. This year's team of role models joined almost 20 Austin Latinitas' clubs speaking on everything from producing radio news to running a local network TV affiliate to music photojournalism. Thank you so much to a special group of women willing to put it all out there for some very inquisitive school-aged Latinas! Latinitas loves: KUT-news' Crystal Chavez and Ruxandra Guidi, Latino USA's Angela Maldonado, Univision's Christine Martinez and Beatriz Gonzalez, Austin Business Journal's Sandra Zaragoza, State Farm's communications dept.'s Amelia Folkes, KEYE-TV's Rosie Gomez, Ahora Si's Gissela Santacruz, La Banda Elastica's Maria Madrigal, photographer Celeste Casas and all the executives at Mercury Mambo advertising including Melissa Garcia, April Alejandro, Carla Levy, Lynn Currie and Erica Cepeda. | |
